Geographical Location
View Royal is a municipality located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It has a total area of approximately 3.85 square kilometers (1.48 sq mi) and borders the city of Colwood to its east, Victoria Harbour to https://viewroyalcasinovictoria.ca/ its south, and Hatley Castle to its west.
History
The area that is now View Royal was first inhabited by indigenous peoples over 2,000 years ago. The Lekwungen people, a subgroup of the Coast Salish First Nation, traditionally used the region for hunting, gathering, and fishing. In the late 19th century, European settlement began to take hold in the area.
During World War I, the Canadian Army established a military training camp near View Royal, which later became known as the Fisgard Blockhouse National Historic Site. The site is still preserved today as a museum and historic landmark.
In 1987, the residents of View Royal voted to incorporate their community into an independent municipality, taking control over local decision-making processes and infrastructure development.
Geography
View Royal’s geography can be characterized by its proximity to Victoria Harbour, which provides a natural barrier against tides and storms. The area is predominantly composed of woodland cover, with significant stands of coniferous trees such as Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, and Arbutus.
Elevation varies from approximately 30 meters (100 feet) near the waterfront to over 150 meters (500 feet) in more elevated areas towards Hatley Castle. View Royal has a relatively mild climate for its latitude, with average temperatures ranging from just below freezing during winter months to mid-teens degrees Celsius in summer.
Economy
As an integral part of Greater Victoria’s urban sprawl, the economy of View Royal is closely linked to that of the region as a whole. Major industries include retail and services, light manufacturing, and tourism, with the latter being particularly significant given the community’s proximity to historic sites such as Hatley Castle.
Additionally, agriculture plays an important role in local economic activity due to its relatively mild climate allowing for year-round farming practices. The primary produce grown within View Royal is blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and Christmas trees, with many small-scale farm operations providing goods directly to the market or supplying larger regional markets.

View Royal has invested heavily in infrastructure development over recent decades. Major projects include a modernized transportation network that links residents seamlessly into Victoria’s broader public transit system.
A comprehensive community center featuring an indoor swimming pool and recreational facilities is also located at View Royal Park.
